United against MRE – Health Region Baltic Sea Coast

The discovery of antibiotics in the early 20th century turned over a new leaf in medicine. Today, about 100 years later, unmindful utilization and inadequate hygiene have turned them into a blunt weapon. The number of infectious agents resistant to many or all antibiotics is increasing steadily. This situation is furthermore worsened by the fact, that there are no antimicrobial drug classes in the process of approval in the foreseeable future. We find ourselves on the verge of a “post-biotic era”, a time when many infections will hardly or not at all be curable– just like a hundred years ago.

Applying a regional concerted approach, the model project Health, Innovative Care and Regional Economy (HICARE) – Health Region Baltic Sea Coast aims at developing effective, standardized, and transferrable intervention measures to efficiently battle the spread of multi-resistant bacteria (MRB).
